In linea con la risoluzione del Comitato Esecutivo del Comitato Olimpico Internazionale e le sue decisioni, l’International Canoe Federation ha annunciato che le squadre, gli ufficiali di gara ed i dirigenti russi e bielorussi non potranno partecipare alle competizioni, riunioni ed eventi ICF fino a nuovo avviso.
La deliberaizone, avvenuta durante la riunione del Board di cui fa parte anche il Presidente della Federazione Italiana Canoa Kayak Luciano Buonfiglio in qualità di tesoriere, è seguita alla decisione, già presa la scorsa settimana, di rimuovere i tre eventi ICF che si sarebbero dovuti tenere in Russia quest'anno: una Coppa del Mondo SUP e due Supercoppe di canoa velocità.
Il Presidente dell'ICF Thomas Konietzko ha affermato che il comitato esecutivo è stato unanime nel sostenere la ferma posizione assunta dal Comitato Olimpico Internazionale e non ha esitato a prendere le proprie decisioni forti per condannare il comportamento dei due paesi. “Come sport globale abbiamo un ruolo importante da svolgere e dobbiamo mostrare leadership su questioni come questa”, ha commentato Konietzko. “Sappiamo che gli atleti e dirigenti innocenti in Russia e Bielorussia che non supportano le azioni del loro governo vengono puniti, ma siamo altresì consapevoli che il costo per i nostri atleti, allenatori e dirigenti in Ucraina è molto più alto.”
“Siamo stati costretti a prendere questa decisione e, nonostante sappiamo di avere tanti amici russi e bielorussi che nulla hanno a che vedere con questa situazione, siamo convinti di dover dare un messaggio chiaro, consapevoli che il difficile momento storico che stiamo vivendo richiede fermezza e unanimità dal mondo sportivo”, ha commentato il Presidente Federale Luciano Buonfiglio. “Nell’esprimere ancora una volta la mia solidarietà all’Ucraina non posso che condividere quanto deciso dal Board Internazionale, augurandoci di tornare quanto prima a palare di pace.”
Il Comitato Esecutivo ha poi votato per rimuovere le bandiere russe e bielorusse da tutti gli eventi internazionali e per bandire gli inni nazionali ed i loghi delle due Federazioni dal sito web dell'ICF e dagli account social media ed ha ha anche deciso di creare un conto per le donazioni per raccogliere fondi per gli atleti ucraini coinvolti nelle ostilità e ha chiesto alle federazioni nazionali di donare, se possibile, alla causa. L'ICF continuerà a monitorare la situazione in corso al fine di modificare le sanzioni, se necessario.
The full ICF executive committee decision is as follows:
The ICF Executive Committee decided today on the following measures based on chapter 4; paragraph d of our ICF statutes.
The sanctions are a response to the disregard of Russia and Belarus of the objectives of the ICF as stated in Article 2, and of the violation of the IOC Code of Ethics and the clear breach of the Olympic Truce.
The ICF Executive Committee (Exco) strongly condemns the war of aggression against the sovereign state of Ukraine by the Russian government, currently being supported by the Belarusian Government. The breach of the Olympic truce is a clear abuse of the UN rules recognised by all countries, and the war of aggression is a blatant violation of all principals of human rights and constitutes an ongoing war crime. The Russian government is disregarding all the values of humanity and sport.
The ICF Exco therefore expressly supports the decisions of the IOC EB of 28.02.2022.
We are aware that necessary measures have an effect upon innocent athletes and officials from both Russia and Belarus, which we deeply regret. However we must take into account the effect Russian actions are having on innocent Ukrainian athletes.
The ICF Exco has therefore agreed unanimously today on the following measures:
- The Russian Canoe Federation will be stripped of the right to host three ICF international competitions it had been awarded for 2022 – an ICF SUP World Cup and two ICF Super Cups.
- Russian and Belarusian athletes, officials and judges will be suspended from all ICF international competitions and executive committee, board, committees, commissions and forums of discussion until further notice.
- The national flags, national anthems and federation images of Russia and Belarus will be removed from all ICF international competitions, websites and graphic materials until further notice.
- The International Canoe Federation supports the Ukrainian canoe family, and calls upon national canoe federations and members of the broader paddling community to donate to an emergency fund, which will be administered by the ICF, and will provide assistance to the Ukrainian Canoe Federation and its athletes and officials during this difficult time.
